OndaTop: Le 10 Migliori Canzoni di Johnny Cash

“La mia vita lavorativa è facile da riassumere: da ragazzo ho lavorato nei campi di cotone, da adulto nella musica”. A Johnny Cash bastavano poche parole per condensare tutta una carriera. “Cercare di definirmi è abbastanza complicato”, scriveva nella sua autobiografia. “Faccio mio un verso di Kris Kristofferson: è una contraddizione vivente, in parte è vero, in parte è una finzione”. Ma la citazione che preferiva per definirsi era un verso della figlia Rosanne: “Crede profondamente a quello che dice, ma questo non fa di lui un santo”.

Sono passati dieci anni, ormai, dalla scomparsa dell’Uomo in Nero. Per tornare ad immergerci nel suo sconfinato repertorio abbiamo pensato di chiedere aiuto a un songwriter che proprio a Johnny Cash si è ispirato per il suo nome di scena: Lieven Scheerlinck, meglio noto come A Singer Of Songs. Dal canzoniere di Cash ha scelto dieci brani legati in maniera inscindibile alla sua traiettoria personale: non solo brani autografi, ma anche alcune di quelle struggenti riletture che hanno contribuito in maniera decisiva a far conoscere il nome di Cash a una nuova generazione. 10. I Walk The Line

Tra tutte le cose che devo a mio padre, Johnny Cash è una di quelle che preferisco. Non è mai stato un grande appassionato di musica, ma c’erano un paio di cantanti che adorava. Paul Anka, John Fogerty e Johnny Cash. Mi ricordo la prima volta che ho sentito questa canzone. Avrò avuto dieci anni più meno. All’epoca ascoltavo Michael Jackson, gli Europe e gli Wham!. Ma in qualche modo questa canzone mi ha preso. Forse era il ritmo allegro, come se stessi seduto su un treno. O lo strano mormorio in sottofondo. Ancora adesso non so perché, ma mi è piaciuta. La cantavo insieme a mio padre. Fino a quando Johnny Cash si è dissolto lentamente come tanti altri ricordi dell’infanzia. Solo molti anni dopo è tornato nella mia vita, questa volta per non andarsene più.

Of all the things I owe my father, Johnny Cash is one of my favorites. He was never a big music lover, but he had a couple of singers he worshiped. Paul Anka, John Fogerty and Johnny Cash. I remember the first time I heard this song. I must have been ten or something like that. I listened to Michael Jackson and Europe and Wham! at the time. But somehow this song got to me. Maybe it was the nice happy rhythm, as if I were sitting on a train. Or the weird humming in the back. I still don’t know why, but I liked it. I used to sing along with my father. Until Johnny Cash slowly faded away like so many other childhood memories. It was only many years later he came back into my life, this time never to leave again.

9. For The Good Times

Questo è il mio genere preferito di country. Lo splendido groove lento, il picking sottile della chitarra, la voce spezzata, e ovviamente le parole. Le separazioni amorose sono responsabili di più di metà della mia collezione di dischi, ma penso che questa sia una delle mie canzoni preferite di sempre nel genere. “There is no need to watch the bridges that we’re burning”. This is my favorite kind of country. The beautiful slow groove, the subtle guitar picking, the broken voice, and of course the words. Break-ups are responsible for more than half of my record collection, but I think this is one of my all-time favorites on the subject. “There is no need to watch the bridges that we’re burning”. Indeed.

8. Thirteen

Un giorno o l’altro dovranno fare una statua a Rick Rubin per quello che ha fatto con Johnny Cash. Ha preso un vecchio cantante dimenticato (anche da me), lo ha spogliato di tutti i cliché e lo ha riportato alla cruda essenza. Johnny Cash una volta ha detto che non avrebbe mai smesso di meravigliarsi per quanta grande musica Rubin gli abbia portato. Giovani artisti e gruppi che Cash non aveva mai sentito come Beck, gli Spain, Will Oldham o i Soundgarden. Questa è forse una delle scelte più eccentriche di Rubin & Cash. Voglio dire, dai, Danzig??!! Ma Johnny Cash ha preso la canzone, l’ha spogliata di tutti i cliché e l’ha riportata alla cruda essenza: una canzone fottutamente bella. “I was born in the soul of misery…”.

Someday Rick Rubin should get a statue somewhere for what he did with Johnny Cash. He took an old and forgotten singer (also by me), peeled off all the clichés and brought out the raw essence again. Johnny Cash once said it never ceased to amaze him how much great music Rubin brought to him. Young singers and bands Cash had never heard of like Beck or Spain or Will Oldham or Soundgarden. This is perhaps one of the most eccentric choices by Rubin & Cash. I mean, come on, Danzig??!! But then Johnny Cash took the song, peeled off the clichés and brought out the raw essence: a bloody good song. “I was born in the soul of misery…”.

7. Port Of Lonely Hearts

Adoro le melodie ubriache di questo brano. E poi è un Johnny Cash vintage: seduto sul molo ad aspettare l’arrivo della nave giusta con la persona giusta. Il tempo trascorre, nulla accade, finché ti ritrovi con nient’altro che un cuore spezzato e una canzone in tasca. Ha registrato questo album, “Story Songs Of The Trains And The Rivers”, con i Tennessee Two, il sogno bagnato di ogni cantante che si strugge per una band.

I love the drunken melodies on this song. It is also vintage Johnny Cash: sitting on the docks waiting for the right boat with the right person to arrive. Time goes by, nothing happens, until you end up with nothing but heart-ache and a song in your pocket. He recorded this album, “Story Songs Of The Trains And The Rivers”, with The Tennessee Two, the wet dream of every singer aching for a band.

6. Ring Of Fire

È il tipo di canzone di cui non ho mai abbastanza. Forse è per le brillanti parti di tromba (sono un patito della tromba da sempre, proprio come mio padre). E questo brano si adatta a qualunque circostanza: viaggi in macchina, serate solitarie, feste, camminate tristi, karaoke… Nessun’altra canzone ha meritato di più di essere una hit.

It’s the kind of song I never get enough of. Maybe it’s because of the brilliant trumpet parts (I am a sucker for trumpets, always have been, just like my father). And the song suits all circumstances: car journeys, lonely evenings, parties, sad walks, karaoke… No other song deserved more to be a hit.

5. If You Could Read My Mind

Johnny Cash era già gravemente malato quando ha registrato “American V: A Hundred Highways”, il che lo rende a volte doloroso da ascoltare. La prima volta che ho sentito questa canzone ho pianto. La sua morte era ancora molto recente e in qualche modo questa canzone ha fatto uscire tutta la sofferenza del lutto. Penso che sia la voce più triste che ho mai sentito. Mi fa venir voglia di alzarmi e abbracciarlo e non lasciarlo più andare. È spezzato, ma ha ancora abbastanza fuoco dentro di sé da tirar fuori questa registrazione senza tempo. Ovviamente anche la brillante melodia di Gordon Lightfoot aiuta.

Johnny Cash was already very ill when he recorded “American V: A Hundred Highways”, which makes it sometimes hurtful to listen to it. I cried the first time I heard this song. His death was still very recent, and somehow this song brought out all my grief and mourning. This is the saddest voice I have ever heard, I think. It makes me want to walk up to him and embrace him and never let him go. He is broken, but he still has enough fire inside to pour out this timeless recording. Of course the brilliant melody by Gordon Lightfoot also helps.

4. The Man Who Couldn’t Cry

Ho riscoperto Johnny Cash grazie a questa canzone. Era passato moltissimo tempo dall’ultimo volta che lo avevo ascoltato e un mio amico mi ha fatto una cassetta in cui c’era anche questa canzone. Mi ha parlato del “nuovo” Johnny Cash che il produttore Rick Rubin aveva inventato e mi ha spinto a comprare l’album. L’ho fatto e da allora Johnny Cash non ha più abbandonato il mio mondo. Questa canzone è divertente e straziante al tempo stesso. Un po’ come la vita, credo.

I rediscovered Johnny Cash thanks to this song. It had been a very long time since I had last listened to him, and then a friend of mine made me a mix tape with this song on it. He told me about the ‘new’ Johnny Cash producer Rick Rubin had invented, and urged me to buy the album. I did, and since then Johnny Cash has never left my world again. This song is funny and heart-wrenching at the same time. Much like life itself, I guess.

3. Spiritual

Gli Spain sono stati uno dei miei punti deboli per anni, per cui potete immaginare la mia gioia quando ho comprato “Unchained” e ho visto la mia canzone preferita del gruppo nella scaletta. Ed era persino meglio di quello che pensavo. Ascoltare Johnny Cash ripetere quelle stesse parole disperate ancora e ancora (“Jesus, I don’t want to die alone”), sentirlo diventare sempre più solo di secondo in secondo, finché la sua potente voce è sul punto di spezzarsi in due alla fine… Non c’è niente di meglio.

The band Spain had been one of my weak spots for years, so you can imagine my joy when I bought “Unchained” and saw my favorite song of theirs on the play list. And it was even better than I thought it would be. Hearing Johnny Cash repeat those same desperate words over and over (“Jesus, I don’t want to die alone”), feeling him get lonelier and lonelier every second until his powerful voice is about the break in two towards the end… This is as good as it gets.

2. Dark As A Dungeon

Ci vuole coraggio per stare di fronte a centinaia di detenuti e cantare una canzone come questa. Fortunatamente i carcerati avevano buon gusto e senso dell’umorismo e hanno reagito entusiasticamente. A tal punto che dopo la canzone Johnny Cash ha dovuto avvertirli: “Volevo solo dirvi che stanno registrando questo concerto per un album che verrà pubblicato dalla Columbia Records, per cui non potete dire “diavolo” o “merda” o cose del genere”. Il che ha fatto gridare e ridere i carcerati ancora più forte. Missione compiuta. Anche gli Sparklehorse hanno fatto una cover straordinaria di questo brano.

It takes guts to stand in front of hundreds of convicts and then sing a song like this one. Fortunately the inmates had good taste and a sense of humor, and reacted enthusiastically. So much so that after the song Johnny Cash had to warn them: “I just wanted to tell you that this show is being recorded for an album released on Columbia Records, so you can't say “hell” or “shit” or anything like that”. Which made the inmates yell and laugh and curse even harder. Mission accomplished. Sparklehorse did an amazing cover of this song as well.

1. Singer Of Songs

Di gran lunga la mia preferita, perfetta da tutti i punti di vista. “Unearthed” è stato pubblicato dopo la morte di Johnny Cash. Ho ascoltato questo brano all’infinito per settimane, sussurrando i suoi versi incredibili insieme a quella voce vecchia e stanca. Per cui, quando MySpace mi ha chiesto un nome per le mie piccole registrazioni casalinghe, mi è sembrato ovvio prendere il titolo di questa canzone. Da allora ci sono rimasto felicemente attaccato.

My favorite by far, perfect in every way. “Unearthed” was released after his death. I had been listening to this track on endless repeat for weeks, whispering the incredible lyrics along to his old & weary voice. So when MySpace asked for a band name for my little home-recorded songs, it seemed obvious to pick this song’s title. I have been happily stuck with it ever since.
