Sull'onda della nostalgia 90's suscitata dalla reunion degli Oasis, la rivista Pitchfork ha pensato bene di compilare una colossale lista di quelle che ritiene le 250 canzoni migliori degli anni 90. Introducendola con queste parole: "Una delle grandi gioie dell'ascoltare musica negli anni 90 era poter curare i propri best-of. Era il decennio dei mixtape su cassetta, i progetti di registrazione casalinga altamente personali e laboriosi che prevedevano di aspettare pazientemente che una canzone venisse trasmessa alla radio per registrarla, o di riavvolgere e avanzare rapidamente fino al momento esatto per doppiare da una cassetta all'altra. Scrivere la tracklist e abbellirla con il design era un'intera forma d'arte a sé stante. Si trattava in fondo della prima versione delle attuali playlist.
