Per una volta, possiamo contravvenire alla regola aurea “Dont judge a book (or a record) by the cover”. Vi proponiamo infatti l'ultima, peculiare classifica pubblicata da Rolling Stone, basata – per una volta – non sui gusti musicali ma sulle preferenze estetiche relative alle copertine dei dischi. “L'album è senza dubbio la migliore invenzione del secolo scorso – scrive Rolling Stone nell'introduzione - ma la musica non è tutta la storia. Anche le copertine degli album sono un'ossessione, fin da quando questi sono stati inventati. Da quando i dischi in vinile da 12 pollici hanno preso piede negli anni 50, confezionati in custodie di cartone, i musicisti sono rimasti affascinati dall'arte raffigurata su quelle copertine, e così i fan. Quando i Beatles hanno rivoluzionato il gioco con la copertina di ‘Sgt. Pepper', nel 1967, è diventato un modo per fare unaffermazione attraverso le immagini di cosa sia la musica. Ma l'arte delle cover continua a evolversi. Quindi questa è la nostra grande celebrazione di quell'arte: le 100 migliori copertine di album di sempre, da Biggie a Beyoncé a Bad Bunny, dai Nirvana a Nas a Neil Young, da SZA ai Sex Pistols. Ma che cosa rende la copertina di un album un classico? “A volte – prosegue Rolling Stone - è un ritratto dell'artista: si pensi ai Beatles che attraversano la strada o a Carole King a Laurel Canyon con il suo gatto. Altre volte sono immagini iconiche e semi-astratte, come i Led Zeppelin, Miles Davis o i My Bloody Valentine. Per alcuni artisti, le cover testimoniano la loro provenienza, come nel caso dei Rem che hanno rappresentato il Sud con il kudzu, oppure Ol' Dirty Bastard che mostra la sua tessera dei buoni pasto per rendere omaggio allo zoo di Brooklyn”. Infine, da ricordare gli autori, perché "molte di queste copertine provengono da fotografi, designer e artisti leggendari, come Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz, Storm Thorgerson, Raymond Pettibon e Peter Saville".
