Gli anni 90 sono stati il grande decennio del “rock alternativo”. Una esplosione di stili e generi che dal britpop al grunge, dallo shoegaze al trip-hop ha lanciato una nuova generazione di artisti, oggi considerati quasi unanimemente dei classici. Per questo il magazine PopMatters ha deciso di omaggiare i Novanta con una top 100 delle “Best Alternative Songs of the 1990s”. Una classifica che, come sempre, offre il fianco a molte critiche e recriminazioni, ma che serve soprattutto a gettare uno sguardo panoramico su un periodo musicale così fertile e innovativo. “Nei 90's il termine 'alternativo' – sottolinea Chris Gerard nell'introduzione - divenne di uso più comune, sostituendo definizioni musicali degli anni 80 come college rock, indie pop, post-modern e underground. Inoltre, esplose in popolarità: dalle enormi stazioni radio come WHFS a Washington, DC, e KROQ a Los Angeles, fino ai palinsesti di Mtv, la musica alternativa dominava il panorama del rock'n'roll. Festival come Lollapalooza e Lilith Fair nacquero in quel periodo, e le band alternative vendettero milioni di album e riempivano le arene, spesso senza bisogno di un singolo di successo nella Top 40”, ricorda ancora PopMatters precisando poi tutti i criteri con i quali è stato interpretato il termine “alternativo” e sono state scelte le canzoni.
