I didn’t really know a lot about David Berman before this year, I’m saddened to say. I’d heard one or two Silver Jews songs perhaps, absent-mindedly, but in the backdrop of his death and the outpouring of emotion towards his life and his music, much of which came from my musical heroes, I listened to Purple Mountains. It’s a true masterpiece; a blend of love, beauty, tragedy, and within it all, humour, whilst staring into the abyss, that is almost impossible to find. I regret it could only be realised in such heartbreaking circumstances as his, in penning an album as a way of saying goodbye.

Prima di quest'anno non sapevo molto di David Berman, mi rattrista dirlo. Avevo sentito forse una o due canzoni dei Silver Jews, distrattamente, ma sullo sfondo della sua morte e delle emozioni manifestate verso la sua vita e la sua musica, molte delle quali provenivano dai miei eroi musicali, ho ascoltato "Purple Mountains". Cass McCombs - "Tip Of The Sphere"

A lot of the records in this list are lyrically brilliant; it’s an aspect of music and songwriting that I’m drawn to almost before anything else. Cass McCombs is one of my all time favourites, if I had to listen to only one act for the rest of my life it would be him, and The Tip Of The Sphere is a beautiful understated, and seemingly underrated, album.

Molti dei dischi in questa lista sono liricamente brillanti; è un aspetto della musica e del songwriting a cui sono attratto quasi prima di ogni altra cosa. Cass McCombs è uno dei miei preferiti di tutti i tempi, se dovessi ascoltare un solo atto per il resto della mia vita sarebbe lui, e The Tip Of The Sphere è un bellissimo album discreto e apparentemente sottovalutato.

Julia Jacklin - "Crushing"

I’ve listened to Pressure To Party by Julia Jacklin I think more than any other song this year, it just doesn’t get old. But there are so many great songs on the album, and she’s got such a pure but also emotive, voice.

Ho ascoltato "Pressure To Party" di Julia Jacklin. Penso che più di ogni altra canzone di quest'anno, semplicemente non invecchi. Ma ci sono così tante grandi canzoni nell'album, e ha una voce così pura ma anche emotiva.

Leonard Cohen - "Thanks For The Dance"

I heard rumours of a posthumous Leonard Cohen album, but Thanks For The Dance was still such a pleasant surprise. Every word is put to use, nothing’s wasted or superfluous. It’s a wonderful and affecting study in worldly, or in this case, other-worldly, reflection.

Ho sentito voci di un album postumo di Leonard Cohen, ma "Thanks For The Dance" è stata comunque una piacevole sorpresa. Ogni parola viene utilizzata, nulla è sprecato o superfluo. È uno saggio meraviglioso e coinvolgente nella sua riflessione mondana o, in questo caso, ultraterrena.

Angel Olsen – "All Mirrors"

There are a lot of really cool, and also some heartbreaking, lines in Angel Olsen’s All Mirrors but it’s the production that brings the magic in this record, sometimes it’s wild, sometimes it’s beautifully sparse, but always perfect.

Ci sono molte linee davvero interessanti, e anche strazianti, in "All Mirrors" di Angel Olsen, ma è la produzione che porta la magia in questo disco, a volte è selvaggia, a volte è meravigliosamente incompleta, ma sempre perfetta.

Jeffrey Lewis & Voltage - "Bad Wiring"

I could talk about Jeffrey Lewis for days, so it’s pretty hard to condense my admiration for him and this record, Bad Wiring, into a few words. In terms of ideas and originality, and also lyrically, few can compare. His music’s a comforting companion to experience this insane world with.

Potrei parlare di Jeffrey Lewis per giorni, quindi è abbastanza difficile condensare la mia ammirazione per lui e questo disco, "Bad Wiring", in poche parole. In termini di idee e originalità, e anche liricamente, pochi possono reggere il confronto. La sua musica è un compagno confortevole per vivere questo mondo folle.

Jemma Freeman And The Cosmic Something - "Jemma Freeman And The Cosmic Something"

Jemma Freeman & The Cosmic Something are friends of mine here in London, and I feel a strange sense of pride in how good this record is. So much emotion and love packed into a set of songs that manages to sound wild and energetic, polished and controlled all at the same time.

Jemma Freeman e The Cosmic Something sono miei amici qui a Londra, e provo uno strano senso di orgoglio per quanto è bello questo disco. Tanta emozione e amore racchiusi in un set di canzoni che riesce a suonare allo stesso tempo selvaggio ed energico, raffinato e controllato allo stesso tempo.

Brittany Howard - "Jaime"

Brittany Howard’s Jaime I only started properly listening to a couple of weeks ago and it’s been pretty much on the go ever since. It’s both delicate and powerful, and a bit of a departure from the last record of her’s I’d listened to which was Alabama Shakes’ Boys & Girls, and I loved that too.

Ho iniziato ad ascoltare correttamente il disco solo un paio di settimane fa ed è praticamente in viaggio con me da allora. È allo stesso tempo delicato e potente, è un po' un distacco dall'ultimo disco di lei che avevo ascoltato quando era negli Alabama Shakes, e questo mi è piaciuto molto.

Big Thief - "Two Hands", "U.F.O.F."

Both Big Thief albums were naturally amazing, I think I preferred Two Hands overall to U.F.O.F. although the latter probably had more stand-out songs on it.

Entrambi gli album dei Big Thief erano naturalmente sorprendenti, penso di aver preferito "Two Hands" in generale a "U.F.O.F.", anche se quest'ultimo probabilmente aveva più canzoni di spicco.

Hands Habits - "Placeholder"

The title track placeholder on Hand Habits’ record is a good enough song alone to get onto my favourite albums of the year list, but the whole thing’s just got a really cool, enjoyable vibe to it. But they’re all gems; I found it hard to leave off some other albums and just keep it to ten.

La title track del disco di Hand Habits è una canzone sufficientemente buona da permettere a questo album di entrare nella lista dei miei preferiti dell'anno, ma tutto il disco ha un'atmosfera davvero bella e divertente.
