Dovreste tutti venire a trovarci. Johnny dice che potete stare da lui!
So, Neil, thanks for answering these few questions and for introducing your music to us. I was very moved by your debut Ep, “Leaf By Leaf”, which is poppy and melodic but also has great taste for arrangements. Most of all, it has a very strong emotional drive, which is hard to find. I guess one way to start discovering you and your music would be to tell us about the connection with Pavey Ark, which I read is a fell (a barren hill, as I understand it) in the Lake District, in Northern England.
Yeh Pavey Ark is the name of a hill in the lake district in the north west of England. It’s a beautiful area of the country and I’ve been many times. I’m going there this weekend actually. I’ve just liked the name since I first heard it. I’ve tried to find out where the name came from but couldn’t find out any information so it quite mysterious. We like to think our music is quite expansive and beautiful. Many of the lyrics are about escaping the rat race so I think the name really suits our sound. Plus it also ranks well in Google searches.
In your bio, there is much emphasis on your home town, Hull. I have to say I find myself at a loss at identifying it, so can you tell us what relevance the city has had for your music? Is all the band lineup “local”?
I was born in Hull. It’s a city in the north east of the country. It’s quite an isolated place as it’s out on a limb. So you have to make a conscious decision to visit, you cant just pass through Hull on the way somewhere else. Which is a good and bad thing. It has it’s own little scenes and cultures that bubble away under the surface. Which is why it has such a great music scene I think. There is a festival in the summer called Humber Street Sesh. It’s a one day festival but gets 50,000 visitors. Almost every band playing is local and performing original material which I think is quite special.
Hull is currently the UK city of culture so we are having some time in the spotlight. It’s had a pretty bad rap in the past and has often appeared in ‘worst place to live in the UK’ polls. But it’s actually a great place to live at the moment.
The band all live in Hull and surrounding area. Alex who plays violin is from Newcastle but lives in Hull now after going to university here. He’s not allowed to leave now, I forbid it.
Your Ep, it seems to me, is balanced between collective folk (reminding me of the now “historic” Wilkommen acts) and a more singer-songwriter approach (“Breaking Out”), in terms of style. Surely, you are more of a singer, compared to other British folk songwriters. Do you agree with this brief description and, for future releases, do you mean to lean more on one side of this balance?
I come from a singer/songwriter background. So my style swings more towards that I guess. We definitely have more of an alternative/new folk style rather than traditional folk. Some of the songs we play together as a band I was playing as a solo artist a couple of years ago so they have that singer/songwriter style. I still write all the songs for the band but for the new songs that are coming through we work out lots of the music as a band rather than on my own. For future releases I still aim to keep that same style. Where some songs will be full band arrangements but some will still be totally stripped back like ’Breaking Out’.
Of course, I have to ask you, what’s in the making for Pavey Ark at the moment? When can we expect an Lp?
We are recording at the moment. Planning to release a new single in Jan 2018 called ‘Cuckoo’ which we are very excited about. It’s definitely our best song yet. Maybe around Spring/Early Summer 2018 for the album. All the songs are written but we need to sort the arrangements some more. It’s also good to play them live for a while as this helps to fix things down and sometimes a song can evolve whilst rehearsing and playing live.
The Ep contains five great songs, in my opinion, but I guess the one which stands out, for me, is the title track. Can you tell us about the theme of the song and your inspiration for it? Thanks again for your time.
"Leaf by Leaf" is a song about our home town Hull. It’s my favourite song on the EP because of what it represents. It’s a song about optimism and regeneration. There’s a great spirit in the city at the moment and we can see change happening day by day, year on year. Were just enjoying our time in the spotlight and making up for the times when we’ve received negative press or been overlooked”. You should all visit us. Johnny said you can stay at his house!
