La classifica dei 100 migliori secondi album di sempre per Consequence

La prova del “difficult second album”, detto anche “sophomore”, sì sa, è una delle più complesse nella carriera di un artista. Ripetere l’exploit dell’esordio per molti è stata un’impresa impossibile. Non per i 100 citati da Consequence, però, nella sua nuova classifica, dedicata proprio alle migliori “seconde prove” di sempre della storia del rock. “Con un album di debutto può succedere di tutto, ma il secondo disco porta inevitabilmente con sé delle aspettative – sottolinea il magazine nell’introduzione – Il primo viene spesso realizzato in privato, praticamente senza un pubblico. Il secondo nasce invece rispettando una scadenza fissata da qualcun altro. Alcuni artisti affinano la propria formula, altri ampliano la loro visione. Ma ciò che fanno quando cominciano ad avvertire quella pressione è sempre rivelatore e, di tanto in tanto, riescono anche a sfatare la maledizione del secondo album”.
Quanto alle regole della classifica, spiega Consequence: “Molti artisti hanno un primo album che in seguito fanno finta non sia mai esistito. E noi facciamo altrettanto. Rientrano in questa categoria diversi tipi di dischi. Ci sono album concepiti come veri e propri esordi ma che, guardati retrospettivamente, sembrano più dei demo. Spesso hanno venduto soltanto poche centinaia di copie, come nel caso degli Slipknot, o addirittura poche decine, come per i Godspeed You! Black Emperor. In altri casi l’artista era ancora un bambino quando pubblicò i suoi primi lavori e non considera quelle opere rappresentative della propria identità artistica, come Björk. Anche quei dischi non vengono conteggiati. Alcuni artisti compaiono in più di un progetto e consideriamo le carriere soliste separatamente da quelle nei gruppi…. È per questo che ‘Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere’ viene considerato qui il secondo album di Neil Young e non il primo dei Crazy Horse. Infine, non consideriamo mixtape, album dal vivo, visual album, Ep o compilation”.
