La rivista Billboard, bibbia delle classifiche americane, si è cimentata in una missione ambiziosa: elencare le 100 migliori canzoni dance di sempre. Una operazione che mira anche a rivalutare una scena troppo spesso sottovalutata nel campo della popular music. “La parola dance music – scrive il magazine nell’introduzione – richiama subito l’immagine di club affollati, festival gremiti e notti passate a ballare senza sosta. Ma questa definizione è anche riduttiva: racchiude sotto un’unica etichetta una quantità enorme di suoni, stili ed esperienze molto diverse tra loro. La dance è una vera e propria cultura… Sì, parla di ballare, ma anche di molto altro. Fin dalla sua nascita tra la fine degli anni Sessanta e i primi Settanta, favorita dall’evoluzione della tecnologia musicale, la dance è stata allo stesso tempo rifugio underground e fenomeno mainstream. Ha assorbito influenze da ogni genere, creando un linguaggio capace di attraversare epoche e continenti. Anche quando è sembrata allontanarsi dalle classifiche, ha continuato a evolversi e a influenzare la musica popolare. Per questo motivo – conclude Billboard – la classifica riunisce artisti e brani che, a prima vista, possono sembrare lontanissimi tra loro, ma che condividono il patrimonio genetico di oltre cinquant’anni di storia della musica dance”.
