L'assolo di chitarra è, da sempre, uno dei momenti topici del rock. Nello speciale "Il rock diventa mito", dedicato proprio ai migliori "solo" di chitarra dagli anni 60 a oggi, Valerio D'Onofrio scrive: "Da sempre figura emblematica, il chitarrista ha attraversato decenni di trasformazioni, aumentando via via la propria iconicità: dal bluesman maledetto e ribelle del rock’n’roll degli anni 50 al creatore di melodie lisergiche e ipnotiche della psichedelia degli anni 60, fino a diventare sempre più centrale con l’avvento dell’hard-rock negli anni 70. Con la nascita del metal, tra la fine dei 70's e l’inizio degli anni 80, il chitarrista diventa una sorta di supereroe e la chitarra quasi una protesi fallica che ne sottolinea la potenza illimitata".
Ora, il magazine statunitense Rolling Stone dedica alla specialità una imponente classifica, intitolata "The 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time". "Sia lode all’assolo di chitarra: una delle forme artistiche più indistruttibilmente grandi di tutta la musica moderna - sottolinea il magazine nell'introduzione - Non c’è nulla come l’emozione di una gloriosa esplosione a sei corde: una saga lunga, contorta, infinita, che va da 'Free Bird' a 'Purple Rain', da 'Johnny B. Goode' a 'Eruption'. Alcuni assoli classici arrivano da virtuosi dello shredding; altri sono semplicemente raffiche di lick meravigliosamente sporchi.
