Facciamo così, affidiamoci direttamente alle parole della band.
“This was made for all the people that think Courtesy is our best album. We came up with the most pretentious music we possibly could, and since that wasn’t enough, we wrote ridiculous words about total bullshit and named the songs in the most annoying fashion we could imagine. But we thought we could keep pushing the envelope; we named the album the same thing as a song on another album of ours (My Love Is Higher…) and then designed an album cover that truly shows you how much we care—it’s a picture of some trees. We have reached the point of complete and total creative bankruptcy, but at least we made it shorter than the last record, so you can get through listening to it and return it to the store for a refund faster".

Il ritorno alle radici, dopo alcune novità messe in campo dall’ultimo “Life... The Best Game In Town”, è chiarissimo fin dai primi secondi di “I Just Want To Go Home”, lenta e funerea marcia doom, dove la voce e le liriche di Creston Spiers sono velenose esalazioni di pura disperazione. D’altra parte, il disco racconta la storia di un uomo alla deriva, che dispera di poter raggiungere, un giorno o l’altro, la salvezza. Ma, sarà perché considero “Courtesy And Good Will Toward Men” inferiore al capolavoro “My Love Is Higher Than Your Assessment Of What My Love Could Be” (una delle opere fondamentali del metal tutto, sia chiaro!), sarà perché mi aspettavo un deciso assestamento delle novità proposte dal precedente lavoro, resta il fatto che, questa volta, la band di Athens, Georgia, finisce per deludermi.

Infatti, siano esse quelle, tormentate e “tragiche”, di “I’m Sick Of All This Too”, “I Alone Got Up And Left” e “I Did Not Call Out” o quelle, insieme grandiose e dimesse (con tanto di desolatissimi e solitari squarci pianistici) di “I Know This Is All My Fault”, le partiture di "A Small Turn Of Human Kindness" stentano davvero a decollare, appiattendosi su un sound che i Nostri hanno tirato su quasi dal nulla oltre tre lustri fa, ma che oggi si mostra appesantito e poco ispirato.
