Bob Dylan, in arrivo un monumentale cofanetto da 39 cd con 371 registrazioni inedite della “Rolling Thunder Revue”

Un viaggio attraverso uno dei capitoli più leggendari della carriera di Bob Dylan, racchiuso in un’imponente raccolta di 39 cd. Il 6 novembre Columbia Records e Legacy Recordings pubblicheranno “The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings”, un box-set che documenta la seconda parte della celebre tournée del cantautore americano, con ben 381 tracce, delle quali 371 mai pubblicate prima.

Il progetto

L’operazione discografica permette di ricostruire quasi integralmente le esibizioni di Dylan nella primavera del 1976, attraverso registrazioni recuperate dai nastri originali.
Accanto all’edizione monumentale arriverà anche un triplo vinile contenente le 22 tracce del concerto del 16 maggio 1976 a Fort Worth, in Texas, remixate a partire dai nastri multitraccia originali. Come anticipazione è già disponibile una versione dal vivo di “Going, Going, Gone”, registrata proprio durante quella serata, ascoltabile a questo indirizzo.

La seconda parte della “Rolling Thunder Revue” prese il via il 18 aprile 1976 a Lakeland, in Florida, per concludersi il 25 maggio a Salt Lake City, dopo 27 date. Rispetto alla prima fase del tour, quella dell’autunno 1975, l’atmosfera si era fatta progressivamente più aspra e incandescente. Dylan, reduce dalla pubblicazione di “Desire”, aveva trasformato la sua carovana musicale in uno spettacolo imprevedibile, a metà strada tra concerto rock, happening collettivo e teatro itinerante.
Sul palco lo accompagnava una formazione di musicisti di grande prestigio, comprendente il bassista Rob Stoner, la violinista Scarlet Rivera e il batterista Howie Wyeth, già coinvolti nelle registrazioni di “Desire”. Alle chitarre figuravano invece Mick Ronson, già collaboratore di David Bowie negli Spiders from Mars, Steven Soles, David Mansfield e T Bone Burnett. Tra gli ospiti più importanti spiccava Joan Baez, tornata a condividere il palco con Dylan per una serie di duetti, tra cui “Blowin’ in the Wind” e “Railroad Boy”.
Proprio T Bone Burnett, ricordando quell’esperienza, propone una lettura particolarmente suggestiva del tour: “La Rolling Thunder Revue fu il primo tour nazionale di punk rock. Aprì una porta che portò a un’esplosione furiosa di nuova musica: The Clash, Elvis Costello, Ramones, Sex Pistols e tanti altri. Dylan l’aveva fatto di nuovo. È bravo ad attraversare porte che nessun altro riesce nemmeno a vedere, porte che gli altri credono siano muri”.

Tra i momenti più significativi documentati dalla raccolta figura il concerto del 23 maggio 1976 a Fort Collins, in Colorado, dal quale venne ricavato lo speciale televisivo “Hard Rain” della Nbc. Quella performance rappresentò uno dei vertici espressivi della tournée, con interpretazioni particolarmente intense e aggressive di brani come “Idiot Wind”, “Shelter from the Storm” e “Maggie’s Farm”.
Nel saggio che accompagna il cofanetto, il giornalista musicale Mikal Gilmore descrive proprio “Idiot Wind” come “una delle esecuzioni più furiose e brillanti che Dylan abbia mai realizzato davanti a una telecamera”. Gilmore ricorda inoltre il carattere irripetibile di quella stagione, segnata da spettacoli spontanei e da un’energia difficilmente riconducibile alle convenzioni del concerto rock tradizionale.
Il box da 39 cd comprende anche un booklet con fotografie rare e le note di Gilmore, offrendo una documentazione particolarmente approfondita di un periodo cruciale nella trasformazione artistica di Dylan. Il materiale consente di seguire l’evoluzione delle scalette e delle interpretazioni lungo il tour, dalle prime date in Florida fino alle esibizioni conclusive, con versioni differenti di classici come “Mr. Tambourine Man”, “Isis”, “One More Cup of Coffee”, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” e “Tangled Up in Blue”.

L’uscita si inserisce in una più ampia operazione di valorizzazione del catalogo di Dylan da parte di Sony Music. Sono infatti previste anche nuove ristampe di alcuni album storici, tra cui “Self Portrait” (1970), “Dylan” (1973), “Empire Burlesque” (1985) e “Knocked Out Loaded” (1986), oltre al ritorno in vinile del live “Bob Dylan At Budokan”, registrato a Tokyo nel 1978, e della raccolta “Greatest Hits Vol. 3”.
Il cofanetto “The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings” e l’edizione in triplo vinile dedicata al concerto di Fort Worth sono già disponibili in preordine.
