Popmuzik 2019: la classifica di Daniel Carlson

Yeah, so I’d heard a bit of Michael Kiwanuka over the years, mostly on BBC6, and it just wasn’t my thing. The ingredients seemed right, but none of what came out of my speakers drew me in. Then I was having dinner at my brother’s house and he put Kiwanuka on. And, while I’d also heard some of these tracks on the radio, it was the ones I hadn’t heard that got my attention, in particular “Hard to Say Goodbye.” Now, just because something sounds old doesn’t mean it’s good or cool (or anything in particular). But sometimes something just doesn’t sound exactly of this (or any) particular moment and happens to be both good and cool. For me, this is that something.

Sean O’Hagan - "Radum Calls, Radum Calls"
One of the biggest musical mysteries to me is why in the world is Sean O’Hagan not a hell of a lot better known? This is absolutely, positively my record of the year. Sean’s writing and arranging gets better all the time, but it’s his singing on this record that I keep coming back to: there’s a confidence and sense that he’s settled into his instrument in a way that he hasn’t quite done before. And, as much as I miss some of synth blips and bloops of years gone by (and they’re not completely gone by any means), the instrumental palette he’s chosen works beautifully with these wonderful songs. This record makes me very happy.

Jouis - "Mind Bahn"
Yeah, so try describing THIS in a couple of sentences. Their website talks about Canterbury and Soft Machine, but I’m hearing Mighty Baby meets Yes meets The Bees. I know, I know: those name-check-y kinds of descriptions can be lame, but I’m just trying to get your attention. The songs are ambitious, but the multi-part vocals and drumming - the latter fluid and dynamically nuanced - turn them from a bit math-y into pieces of music that you completely sink into. I’d love to see them at some point - it’s only three people and I’m dying to know how they execute this very layered and complex music in a live setting. Maybe in 2020...

Liam Hayes - "Mirage Garage"
Cassette only, but so good that it might just be worth getting a cassette player ot hear it. There’s a bit of a funny story to this one, a story that’s quintessentially Liam. Many of the tunes on this release were tracked in a proper studio in LA ten (or so years) ago but went unreleased (they’re out there if you know where to look). At some point in the last year or two,, Liam apparently decided that he wanted to get the songs - if not those recordings - out there, so he and Luther Russell had another run at them, taking a decidedly lower-fi approach. In other words, he did all kind of backwards: big studio productions followed by “garage” recordings. And yet it’s really terrific and cohesive and doesn’t sound lo-fi for the sake of lo-fi at all (which is so often the case). These are tremendous songs and the performances really shine.

Latest from my favorite musician who might, possibly, could be from another planet. What does this record sound like? Well, to my ears, it sounds like the most interesting video game soundtrack I’ve ever heard. Not just in the choice of sounds - which often comes across as j ust this side of 8-bit - but the songs themselves, with their simple-sounding (but definitely n ot simple) melodies and repeated instrumental motifs. And yet...warm and inviting. And personal. And reflective. Joni Mitchell from Pluto? Maybe. Oh, and I’ll never stop hearing Komeda’s Lena Karlsson in her voice (which is always a good thing - here are you Lena?).

Michael Leonhart Orchestra - "Suite Extracts Vol. 1"
Kind of a curve ball here. As a fan of the large jazz ensembles of the 1950s (or so - I’m thinking Ellington and his suites), I’m regularly perplexed at the shortage of musicians working in the genre today. Yes, I know it’s an expensive proposition and the potential audience isn’t huge , but still it seems like there should be at least a few people out there making those kinds of records. Lo and behold, Leonart has assembled a brilliant group of musicians and is writing inventive and exciting arrangements for them to play. And, as fantastic as the records are, the ensemble is just as great live - easily one of the most exciting groups I’ve heard play in NYC in the last ten years. So, even if you don’t think you like jazz (or Ellington or large ensembles), check this out. And, if you’re in NYC and they’re playing, don’t miss them.

Jean-Emmanuel Deluxe and Friends - "Rouen Dreams"
A real oddball record. On first listen, I didn’t know what to think - this is a super eccentric collections of recordings. The singing isn’t exactly (or, at points, remotely) singing. The production and playing is a bit of a mess at times. But, after a few head-scratching listens, I’ve found it’s an album that I keep going back (and back, and back again) to. I know, I really haven’t gone to much trouble to describe what’s in the grooves, but this is one case where you should just check it out. There really should be more records like this.

Diagonal - "Arc"
A lovely mix of the prog and the psych and a bit of psych-folk and a bit of prog-metal and, well, they’ve seem to have got it just about all covered here. Like many of my other favorite albums of this (and any) year, this one takes you on a journey. I’m not sure where that journey goes in any literal sense, but there’s been a lot of care taken with regards to songwriting and arrangements and keeping you - as a listener - on your toes. Just when you think you know what you’re about to hear next, along comes something that’s completely out of left field. And, as with the Jouis record, I’m loving the drumming here. Great guitar playing and singing, too.

Gruff Rhys - "Pang!"
I don’t understand a word of Welsh, but like the SFA’s great Mwng album - also sung in the language – that hasn’t kept me from loving this brilliant record. Rhys has limited his palette here - it’s mostly guitar, singing, and percussion – but his writing (and that singing) comes through loud and clear. Terrific songs, sparse (but very thoughtful) arrangements, and absolutely lovely performances. I really wonder what those lyrics are about...

Bitw - "Bitw"
Ah, another lovely thing from Wales. Feels like I’m stepping back into the mid-90s (and that’s a great thing!). While there are traces of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci here, what I really feel like I’m hearing is a band that shares Gorky’s influences: fellow travelers, even if it is two decades later. It’s all a lovely mix of electronic and acoustic, with lovely word sounds (most of the lyrics are in Welsh), sung in an almost deadpan way. But it’s the songs themselves - the super hooky melodies and gently shifting chords - that kept me coming back.
