Day Of The Dead

Era addirittura l’aprile del 2011 quando si annunciava che sarebbe arrivato un seguito di “Dark Was The Night”, la prima delle compilation-monstre organizzata dai fratelli Dessner per la Red Hot, Onlus impegnata nella lotta all’Aids attraverso, appunto, la collaborazione coi musicisti (e nata per aiutare la comunità artistica newyorkese agli inizi degli anni 90). Cinque anni o più per produrre 59 tracce, sei ore di musica, uno sforzo che appare immane, ma forse non così stupefacente, dati i mezzi odierni.
Insomma, è scontato che si tratti di un’operazione lodevole (etc. etc.), grandiosa per la quantità di nomi coinvolti e per la semplice mole di questo lavoro, sicuramente difficile da affrontare e da giudicare. Intanto, dopo che “Dark Was The Night” era stata una compilation quasi tutta composta di brani inediti, perché i Grateful Dead? Una band forse non sulla cresta dell’onda presso il pubblico più giovane, forse legata a un periodo più di altre, insomma la band “muffosa” per eccellenza.

Eppure i National sono cresciuti coi Dead, e si capisce bene come si tratti di una band beniamina dei musicisti, se non del pubblico. “Facevamo jam di ore su ‘Eyes Of The World’”, racconta Aaron Dessner dei tempi col fratello Bryce e con il batterista Brian Devendorf. E nella raccolta c’è sicuramente passione, ma l’effetto estenuante dell’avvicendamento di trenta-quaranta band (nonostante diverse tracce, intelligentemente, siano suonate dalla house band, composta principalmente dagli stessi National, con il featuring del caso) emerge prepotentemente dopo pochissime tracce.
La bontà dell’iniziativa non nasconde la smania un po’ bulimica di far salire il maggior numero di persone possibile su questo carrozzone, una sorta di grande happening midstream – ma francamente è difficile giudicare positivamente un lavoro artistico in cui “l’importante è partecipare”.

Soprattutto in queste versioni in studio, come spesso accade nelle cover, tira un’aria di “compitino”, sarà per il rispetto per l’antenato mitico, sarà perché (versione cattiva) molti ci hanno investito il “giusto”, oppure anche perché molti dei nomi coinvolti coltivano ormai più un mestiere artistico che una passione. Per capirsi meglio, ecco qualche esempio di pezzi vagamente sopra la sufficienza: il funk di “Shakedown Street”, riproposto in maniera smargiassa dagli Unknown Mortal Orchestra, anche se senza grande inventiva; il bell’arrangiamento chamber-folk dei Luluc di “Till The Morning Comes”.
Forse l’unico modo per tirar fuori una qualche continuità, un qualche spirito unificante da questo pot-pourri di artisti sarebbe stato un grande evento live (molto anni 90), una sorta di National & Friends – cosa che fra l’altro avverrà, anche se ovviamente in formato minore, al prossimo festival Eaux Claires (quello organizzato da Justin Vernon).
Sarebbe stato decisamente meglio registrare quella performance, in retrospettiva: più sintesi, più continuità formale e più coinvolgimento dell'ascoltatore nel progetto.
