Una lista ambiziosa – e inevitabilmente molto discrezionale – ma che intende tracciare un consuntivo sintetico del meglio della musica uscita nel nuovo millennio. La rivista online PopMatters ha aggiornato la sua classificva dei cento migliori dischi degli anni 2000. “Con il senno di poi e, volendo, con un po’ di nostalgia, torniamo indietro negli anni 2000 alla ricerca dei migliori album del decennio”, scrive la redazione del magazine presentando i “100 Best Albums of the 2000s”. La linea editoriale della storica rivista online statunitense, fondata nel 1999 da Sarah Zupko, è orientata – come da nome – al pop, in tutte le sue sfaccettature, dal mainstream all’indie: non stupitevi quindi se in questa lista saranno questo tipo di sonorità a risultare prevalenti, ma non mancano anche capisaldi di altri generi, dall’hip-hop all’elettronica, dal country all’alternative rock. Venticinque anni dall’inizio del nuovo millennio e del nuovo secolo. Un significativo “giro di boa”, che ha spinto anche la rivista statunitense Rolling Stone a tracciare un consuntivo musicale. Si tratta della classifica dei 250 migliori album realizzati finora nel Ventunesimo secolo, ovvero dal 2000 in poi. Ne è scaturita una selezione molto ampia ed eterogenea in cui a dominare, ancora una volta, sono le produzioni americane, ma non mancano sorprese. Se Quen Bey, alias Beyoncé, stacca tutti con il suo “Lemonade“, conquistano posizioni rilevanti anche altre artiste femminili di successo di questi anni, come Lana Del Rey, Fiona Apple, Adele, Lady Gaga, Missy Elliott e Taylor Swift (tutte tra le prime venti della classifica). Sorprende – anche se solo parzialmente – il secondo posto dei britannici Radiohead con “Kid A“, seguiti da “Blonde” di Frank Ocean. In buona posizione anche l’album-testamento di David Bowie, “Blackstar“, che conquista il 15° posto, mentre un altro maestro come Bob Dylan piazza al n.19 il suo disco del 2001, “Love And Theft“.

“Nel 21° secolo, la musica è diventata più universale, immediata e accessibile che mai – ricorda Rolling Stone nell’introduzione – Il 1° gennaio 2000, il costo medio di un cd era di circa 18 dollari, il che significava che possedere legalmente 250 album richiedeva una spesa di circa 4.500 dollari. Esisteva già Napster, e persino allora era chiaro che l’era del cd a 18 dollari stava per finire. Tuttavia, neanche i più ottimisti sostenitori del download avrebbero potuto immaginare un mondo in cui ogni album mai registrato potesse entrare in un piccolo computer tascabile. Un cambiamento così radicale nel consumo culturale ha inevitabilmente portato con sé conseguenze contrastanti. Eppure, nonostante i cambiamenti tecnologici degli ultimi 25 anni (masterizzazione di cd, iPod, condivisione di file, streaming), l’esperienza d’ascolto incentrata sull’album e di lunga durata è rimasta al centro della musica”. Una rivoluzione in cui, secondo il magazine statunitense, alcune popstar sono state in prima linea nell’innovazione: “Prendiamo in considerazione i percorsi di due superstar con quattro album presenti in questa lista: Beyoncé e Taylor Swift. A metà degli anni 2000, entrambe appartenevano a mondi dominati dai successi radiofonici, Beyoncé nell’R&B mainstream e Swift nel country. Negli anni DieciTaylor Swift ha rinnovato i suoni della Top 40 con il synth-pop emotivo di ‘1989‘, mentre Beyoncé ha creato un proprio universo musicale, personale e politico con ‘Lemonade‘. Negli anni 2020, hanno compiuto passi ancora più audaci, come l’esplorazione folk-intimista di Swift con ‘Folklore’ e i capolavori di studi di genere di Beyoncé con ‘Renaissance’ e ‘Cowboy Carter’. Percorsi ugualmente ambiziosi emergono in tutta la nostra lista – prosegue Rolling Stone – dai Radiohead che dissolvono l’alt rock con ‘Kid A‘ a SZA che reinterpreta l’R&B con ‘CTRL’ e ‘SOS’; da Lady Gaga che trasforma il pop in una galleria warholiana con ‘The Fame Monster’ fino a Kendrick Lamar, che sforna “Good kid, m.A.A.d city“, un disco rap ricco quanto un romanzo”.
